Welcome to phonics! Phonics helps us read by connecting letters to sounds. Let's start with the letter A. The letter A makes the sound /æ/ as in apple. Can you say /æ/ apple? Now let's learn the five short vowel sounds. A makes the sound /æ/ as in ant. E makes the sound /ɛ/ as in egg. I makes the sound /ɪ/ as in igloo. O makes the sound /ɒ/ as in octopus. U makes the sound /ʌ/ as in umbrella. Can you repeat each sound? Now let's learn some consonant sounds. Consonants are letters that are not vowels. B makes the sound /b/ as in ball. C makes the sound /k/ as in cat. D makes the sound /d/ as in dog. Practice saying these sounds clearly! Now let's blend sounds together to make words! When we put C plus A plus T together, we get CAT. When we put D plus O plus G together, we get DOG. This is how we read by blending letter sounds! Great job learning phonics!
