Neurons are the basic functional units of the nervous system. Each neuron has a cell body containing the nucleus, dendrites that receive signals from other neurons, and an axon that transmits signals away from the cell body. Communication occurs through electrical signals within neurons and chemical signals at synapses, the connection points between neurons. This cellular network enables the complex information processing that makes nervous system function possible.
