Last spring, while working in Yellowstone, I decided to follow a trail through a shadowy forest. When I emerged on the other side, I was met with a scene that literally took my breath away. In the distance, an eagle soared above snow-covered peaks, and below, the still lake mirrored the majestic landscape. The beauty was so captivating, I couldn’t help but focus on capturing it with my camera. But then, just as I was immersed in the scene, I felt a strange sensation—like I was being watched. I kept the camera to my eye and turned slowly, only to freeze in place. Just a few meters away stood a massive bear, its thick brown fur glistening with droplets of water. The bear locked eyes with me, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still as we both silently observed one another.
