Caterpillars are the larval stage of moths and butterflies. They appear in homes because they're searching for food sources like fabrics, stored grains, and organic materials. These creatures need warm temperatures and protected spaces to survive, which makes our homes ideal environments for them.
Three main types of caterpillars commonly invade homes. Pantry moth larvae are small and brown, targeting stored grains and cereals. Clothes moth caterpillars are cream-colored and feed on natural fabrics like wool and silk. Carpet beetle larvae are dark and round, damaging carpets and upholstery. These pests are most active during spring and summer but seek warm indoor shelter during colder months.
Caterpillars are attracted to homes by specific food sources. In kitchen areas, they target grains, cereals, flour, pet food, and dried fruits. Living areas provide wool clothing, cotton fabrics, and carpet fibers. Storage areas contain cardboard boxes, paper products, and organic debris. Different caterpillar species prefer different materials, which explains why they appear in various rooms throughout the house.
