Welcome to learning about clocks! A clock helps us know what time it is. Every clock has a round face with numbers from 1 to 12. There are two hands: the short blue hand is called the hour hand, and the long red hand is called the minute hand. These hands move around the clock to show us the time.
Now let's learn to read O'CLOCK times! When the long minute hand points straight up to the 12, we say O'CLOCK. The short hour hand tells us which hour it is. Look, when the hour hand points to 3 and the minute hand points to 12, it's 3 O'CLOCK! Let's see different O'CLOCK times.
Now let's learn HALF PAST times! When the minute hand points straight down to the 6, it means half of the hour has passed. We say HALF PAST. Notice how the hour hand is halfway between two numbers. When it's halfway between 2 and 3, we say HALF PAST 2. Let's see more examples!
Now let's learn quarter times! Quarter Past means the minute hand points to 3, which is 15 minutes past the hour. Quarter To means the minute hand points to 9, which is 45 minutes past the hour, or 15 minutes before the next hour. Watch how the hands move for these special times!
Finally, let's learn to calculate how long activities take! If something starts at 2 o'clock and ends at 4 o'clock, we count the hours: 2 to 3 is one hour, 3 to 4 is another hour, so it's 2 hours total! The green hand shows start time, red hand shows end time. Practice counting the hours between them!
