Chinese family terminology is remarkably specific and systematic. Unlike English, Chinese distinguishes between paternal and maternal relatives with different terms. For example, paternal grandparents are called Yéye and Nǎinai, while maternal grandparents are Wàigōng and Wàipó.
Chinese sibling terminology is based on both gender and age order. Older brothers are called Gēge, older sisters are Jiějie. Younger brothers are Dìdi, and younger sisters are Mèimei. This system immediately tells you the relative age and gender of each sibling.
