Like, maybe you have 3 groups of cookies, and each group has 2 cookies. How many cookies do you have in total? You could count them all one by one... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6! Or, you could add them up: 2 plus 2 plus 2 equals 6! That's called repeated addition! Multiplication is just a super-duper fast way to do repeated addition! Instead of saying "2 plus 2 plus 2", we can say "3 groups of 2". And in math language, we use a little 'x' sign that means "groups of"! So, "3 groups of 2" becomes 3 times 2! And guess what? 3 times 2 is also 6! Wowza! So, multiplication is just counting groups of things! Like if you have 4 friends, and each friend has 3 balloons. How many balloons in total?
