Welcome to second grade math! Today we're learning about addition. Addition means putting groups of things together to find out how many we have in total. Let's use apples as an example. If we have three apples and add two more apples, we get five apples total. We write this as three plus two equals five.
Now let's learn to add bigger numbers! When we add twenty-three plus fourteen, we line up the numbers by place value. First, we add the ones: three plus four equals seven. Then we add the tens: two plus one equals three. So twenty-three plus fourteen equals thirty-seven!
Now let's learn about subtraction! Subtraction means taking away things from a group to find out how many are left. If we have seven cookies and we eat three of them, how many cookies are left? We take away three cookies from seven cookies, and we have four cookies remaining. We write this as seven minus three equals four.
Sometimes when we add, we need to regroup! Let's add twenty-eight plus fifteen. First, we add the ones: eight plus five equals thirteen. But thirteen ones is the same as one ten and three ones. We write the three in the ones place and carry the one ten to the tens column. Now we add the tens: one plus two plus one equals four tens. So twenty-eight plus fifteen equals forty-three!
Congratulations! You've learned the basics of addition and subtraction. Remember, addition means putting groups together, and subtraction means taking things away. Sometimes we need to regroup when adding or subtracting bigger numbers. Keep practicing these skills, and you'll become a math star! Great job today!
