Welcome to our exploration of simple machines. A simple machine is a basic mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force. These devices are the fundamental building blocks of more complex machines. Here we see a lever, one of the six classic simple machines, showing how a small force can move a larger load using a fulcrum as the pivot point.
There are six classic types of simple machines. First, the lever, like a seesaw or crowbar. Second, the wheel and axle, such as a doorknob or steering wheel. Third, the pulley, found in flagpoles and cranes. Fourth, the inclined plane, like ramps and stairs. Fifth, the wedge, including axes and knife blades. And sixth, the screw, such as wood screws and bolts. Each type works differently but all provide mechanical advantage.
