Welcome to the amazing world of light! Light is a form of energy that travels in straight lines at incredible speed. Scientists have discovered that light has a fascinating dual nature - it can behave like waves, similar to ripples spreading across water, and also like tiny particles called photons. This dual nature helps explain many properties of light, including how it reflects off surfaces.
Reflection is simply when light hits a surface and bounces off, just like bouncing a ball off a wall. Light follows two important laws of reflection. First, the angle at which light hits the surface, called the angle of incidence, is always equal to the angle at which it bounces off, called the angle of reflection. Second, the incoming ray, reflected ray, and the normal line all lie in the same plane. Smooth surfaces like mirrors reflect light very well, while rough surfaces scatter light in all directions.
There are three main types of mirrors. Plane mirrors are flat and give you a normal reflection that looks just like you, but flipped left to right. Concave mirrors curve inward like the inside of a spoon and can focus light rays to a single point called the focus. Convex mirrors curve outward like the back of a spoon and spread light rays apart. These different mirror types are used in many applications - concave mirrors in telescopes and makeup mirrors, convex mirrors in car side mirrors for wider viewing angles.
When light reflects off mirrors, it forms images. There are two types of images. Real images are formed where actual light rays meet after reflection. These can be projected onto a screen like in movie theaters and are usually upside down or inverted.
