Following Lin Xiangru's diplomatic successes, he was promoted to a position higher than General Lian Po. This created tension between the two men. Lian Po felt this promotion was unfair, believing his military achievements were greater than Lin Xiangru's diplomatic accomplishments. He publicly declared his intention to humiliate Lin Xiangru whenever they met.

In a remarkable act of humility, Lian Po stripped to the waist, carried thorny branches on his back, and went to Lin Xiangru's home to apologize. This famous gesture, known as 'carrying thorns to ask for punishment', led to their reconciliation and the beginning of a strong friendship.
