Thermal imaging detects heat signatures from objects, while night vision amplifies existing light. Though they serve similar purposes, they work on completely different principles and have distinct advantages.
Thermal imaging works by detecting infrared radiation, which is heat energy emitted by all objects. Every object with a temperature above absolute zero emits thermal energy. The thermal camera captures this infrared radiation and converts it into a visible image. Warmer objects appear brighter or in different colors, while cooler objects appear darker. This technology works in complete darkness and can see through smoke and fog, but cannot penetrate solid walls.
