The Lawrence view is a specialized lateral projection of the shoulder performed when the patient cannot be moved from the bed position. This technique is particularly useful for trauma patients who must remain supine. In this position, the patient lies on their back with the unaffected arm raised above the head. The image receptor is placed vertically against the lateral aspect of the affected shoulder. The central ray is directed horizontally through the chest from the unaffected side, aiming at the surgical neck of the humerus. This view effectively visualizes the shoulder joint and humeral head while minimizing patient movement.
