Hello! Today we're going to learn about where dragonflies live. A habitat is the special place where an animal makes its home. Dragonflies need to live near water, like ponds, lakes, and rivers! They love these wet places because that's where they grow up and find food.
Did you know that baby dragonflies don't look like their parents at all? Baby dragonflies are called nymphs, and they actually live underwater! They stay in the water for months or even years before they grow up. These nymphs breathe through special gills and they're very good hunters. They catch and eat small water creatures like tiny fish and mosquito larvae.
When a nymph is ready to become an adult, something amazing happens! It climbs out of the water onto a plant or stick. Then, its skin splits open, and a beautiful adult dragonfly comes out! This incredible change is called metamorphosis. It's like the nymph is wearing a costume, and when it's time to grow up, it takes the costume off to reveal the real dragonfly inside!
Once a dragonfly grows up, it flies around the water and nearby areas. Adult dragonflies like to perch on plants, rocks, or sticks to rest and watch for food. They're excellent hunters with amazing eyesight! Dragonflies eat mosquitoes and other small flying insects. They can even catch their food while flying! This makes them very helpful to humans because they eat pests like mosquitoes that can bite us.
Let's remember what we learned about dragonfly habitats! Dragonflies need water to live - like ponds, lakes, or rivers. Baby dragonflies, called nymphs, live underwater where they grow and hunt. When they're ready, they go through an amazing change called metamorphosis to become adults. Adult dragonflies fly around the water and nearby areas, resting on plants and rocks. They help us by eating mosquitoes and other pests. So next time you see a dragonfly, remember it needs water nearby to make its home!
