Welcome! Today we'll learn how a mini-split air conditioning system works. A mini-split has two main parts: an indoor unit that cools your room, and an outdoor unit that releases heat outside. These units are connected by refrigerant lines that carry a special fluid called refrigerant through a continuous cycle.
The first step happens in the indoor unit, also called the evaporator. Here, liquid refrigerant at low pressure flows through the evaporator coils. Warm air from the room passes over these cold coils, transferring its heat to the refrigerant. This heat absorption causes the refrigerant to evaporate and turn into a low-pressure gas.
Next, the low-pressure refrigerant gas travels to the outdoor unit where it enters the compressor. The compressor is like a pump that squeezes the gas, dramatically increasing both its pressure and temperature. This is similar to how a bicycle pump gets hot when you pump air - compression creates heat.
In step three, the hot high-pressure gas flows through the condenser coils in the outdoor unit. A fan blows outdoor air over these hot coils, allowing the refrigerant to release its heat and condense back into a liquid. Finally, in step four, the liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion valve which suddenly reduces its pressure, cooling it down before it returns to the indoor unit to start the cycle all over again.
